“Master of puppets” (Metallica)

I’m in a rather dominant mood today, so it’s time to put another track in the spotlight. If you’d like to know why I’ve become that evil creature that is torturing CMS by giving him all those silly assignments, here’s the answer! Ever since I was 12 years old, I’ve been singing (well, more or less singing) Metallica’s “Master of puppets”. “Master of puppets” was among the first records I’ve ever bought, along with The Pixies’ “Bossanova” and Faith No More’s “The real thing”. Moreover, one of the first CDs I bought was The Cure’s “Disintegration”. Since Metallica as well as The Cure and The Pixies are performing at Werchter this year, I couldn’t stop myself from buying a ticket… out of sheer nostalgia!

Lyrics "Master of puppets"

End of passion play, crumbling away

I’m your source of self-destruction

Veins that pump with fear, sucking darkest clear

Leading on your deaths construction

Taste me you will see

More is all you need

You’re dedicated to

How I’m killing you

Come crawling faster

Obey your master

Your life burns faster

Obey your master

Master of puppets I’m pulling your strings

Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams

Blinded by me, you can’t see a thing

Just call my name, `cause I’ll hear you scream

Just call my name, `cause I’ll hear you scream

[end chorus]

Needlework the way, never you betray

Life of death becoming clearer

Pain monopoly, ritual misery

Chop your breakfast on a mirror

Master, master, where’s the dreams that I’ve been after?

Master, master, you promised only lies

Laughter, laughter, all I hear and see is laughter

Laughter, laughter, laughing at my cries

Hell is worth all that, natural habitat

Just a rhyme without a reason

Neverending maze, drift on numbered days

Now your life is out of season

The final word

I'm not going to torture CMS any longer. Normally it would have been Kuusou who'd publish the word, but I think she's in the process of returning to Belgium right now, so she probably hasn't got time to play games!
The last word is: fantasie
One more hint. It's a quote by Joseph Joubert.
Go for it CMS, use your imagination!

"Gorecki" by Lamb

I urgently have to find a way to get rid of my bitchy reputation!

Therefore, Aisling goes “emo” again! You see, I’m good at heart when push comes to shove!

The song that I’d like to share with you this time is “Gorecki” by Lamb.

I’m really looking forward to their performance at Werchter on the 4th of July!

Lyrics “Gorecki”

If I should die this very moment

I wouldn't fear

For I've never known completeness

Like being here

Wrapped in the warmth of you

Loving every breath of you

Still my heart this moment

Or it might burst

Could we stay right here

Until the end of time

'Til the earth stops turning

Wanna love you 'til the seas run dry

I've found the one I've waited for

All this time I've loved you

And never known your face

All this time I've missed you

And searched this human race

Here is true peace

Here my heart most calm

Safe in your soul

Bathed in your sighs

Wanna stay right here

Until the end of time

'Til the earth stops turning

Gonna love you 'til the seas runs run dry

I've found the one I've waited for

All I've known,

All I've done,

All I've felt,

Was leading to this

All I've known,

All I've done,

All I've felt,

Was leading to this

Wanna stay right here

Until the end of time

'Til the earth stops turning

Gonna love you 'til the seas run dry

I've found the one I've waited for

The one I've waited for

Wanna stay right here

Until the end of time

'Til the earth stops turning

Gonna love you 'til the seas run dry

I've found the one I've waited for

The one I've waited for

The one I've waited for

Lamb will also perform at “De Lokerse Feesten” on 31st of July.

A new challenge for CMS

Dear CMS,

I think you will be eager to discover your next assignment. It might be a little bit complicated, but I’m confident that you’ll manage very well again.

This time, I’ll give you a quotation that should inspire you in writing a rather philosophical article. However, I won’t publish the quotation as such. First, you’ll have to search for it yourself. (Do I hear the word “bitch” echoing through the deepest of cyber dimensions?)

The quotation consists of 7 words and I asked 7 people to publish 1 word on their weblog. (I was not mistaken, I truly hear the word “bitch” resounding!). The only thing you have to do is collect the words, solve the puzzle and start writing.

This is how it works:

1. Because it’s difficult to ask 7 people to publish something at one point in time, I will gradually reveal the weblogs where you’ll have to search, after I’ve received the confirmation that they published it.

2. If you have collected your 7 words and solved the puzzle, I’d strongly advise you to check the quotation on the internet: we do want the words to be in the right order!

3. And then you can finally start writing (and don’t forget the picture)!

The following master webloggers were ready to cooperate (thanks everyone!!):

One more to go, and what's more, it's the most important word that's still missing!

CMS strikes back!

Well, well, well! CMS has acquitted himself very well of his first task!

You can read the result at: http://cms.skynetblogs.be.

What do you think ladies? Are we satisfied? If I listen carefully, I think I can hear murmurs of approval… Congrats, you cunning old fox!

I must say that I found at least six typing errors in your first paragraph, but obviously you didn’t count it in, so for once I will show mercy on you.

Are you ready for the next one then? Or would you prefer a short break now?

I’m pretty sure that you’re dying to impress us all once again, aren’t you?

Assignment 1 for CMS

Dear CMS,

Thank you for accepting the challenge! You are very brave indeed.

The first assignment will be easy. I think it might please your female supporters.

This is the title: 101 reasons why I’m irresistible

(To avoid all confusion: I=CMS, I myself might be irresistible too, but that's classified information).

If you don’t find 101 reasons, 10 will do… and if you don’t find 10 reasons, you’ll just have to lie…

Don’t forget, you’ll have to add a picture too! Shall we finally get to see you in some irresistible pose or other? Who knows! Maybe you should ask MJ to do the photo session? Anyway, good luck!

A challenge for fellow blogger CMS

Today was another lucky day! I was visitor n° 14 499 at http://cms.skynetblogs.be and so I won a prize, which I’m even free to choose…

I gave it some thought and decided that I’d like to submit CMS to the following challenge:

Dear CMS,

I’d like to give you 3 assignments related to blogging.

For example: I give you a title, a topic, a picture, a quote or anything  … and you’ll write an article about it on your weblog.

Here are the rules:

1) You’ll write in Dutch

2) You’ll write a decent article, not just five short sentences.

3) Every article will be accompanied by a well-matched picture

4) There’s no time limit on the assignments, as soon as you’ve finished the first one I will publish the next one.

5) But since you are a very articulate human being, all this won’t be a problem to you, so I added this very important rule to make it a little bit more difficult: for every 5 typing mistakes I find in your articles, I give you one extra assignment (I wanted to give you one extra assignment per mistake, but then I’ll probably shall be giving you assignments for a whole year ;-) ).

Dear CMS, are you willing to accept this challenge?

I promise you it’ll be fun … for me, for your visitors, for all fellow bloggers and even for yourself!

I thought I was a tough lady, always able to handle situations (except for the situation of keeping my house clean, but who needs a clean house when there are so many interesting things out there?). However, I frowned my brows, scratched my head and asked myself “are you really a tough lady?”.

After a few moments of introspection, the answer came as a big shock to me!

How tough can you be:

·  if you start crying as soon as something nasty happens to one of the characters in your favourite soap series?

·  if tears start rolling down your cheeks, when one of the good guys dies in a movie, or, even worse, when something bad happens to an animal in the movie?

·  if you once managed to cry during half of a Tindersticks concert?

Another disillusion: so much for being tough!

"Another night in" by Tindersticks

Since I’ve posted a schedule for “Feest in het Park”, I’d like to present you a song by Tindersticks. Beware, the song won’t exactly cheer you up, but I think it’s so beautiful! This band can really sweep me off my feet. Whenever I go to a Tindersticks concert, I am always scared that I might not be strong enough to control my emotions and, believe me, that’s the only band that does that to me (I’m actually a tough lady, you know)!

I’m afraid you’ll need the lyrics though; otherwise you certainly won’t understand a thing of what the guy’s singing!

Another night in

Greed's all gone now, there's no question

And I can see you push your hair behind your ear

Regain your balance

Doesn't matter where she is tonight

Or with whoever she spends her time

If these arms were meant to hold her

They were never meant to hold her so tight

For the love of that girl

Greed's all gone now, panic subsides

When I could run, pulling arms to love her

Try to put myself on the inside

Of the love of that girl

Tears swell, you don't know why

For the love of that girl

They never fall, they can never run dry

For the love of that girl

Promise is never over, never questions that needed reply

But she could breathe deep into my neck

Let me know I'm just on the outside

Of the love of that girl

Tears swell, you don't know why

For the love of that girl

They never fall, they can never run dry

For the love of that girl

Greed's all gone now, there's no question

And I can see you push your hair behind your ears

Regain your balance

Doesn't matter where she is tonight

Or with whoever she spends her time

If these arms were meant to hold her

They were never meant to hold her so tight

For the love of that girl

Tears swell, you don't know why

For the love of that girl

They never fall, they can never run dry

For the love of that girl

"Yesterday's mistakes" by Oi Va Voi

Well, it has been almost a week now that you could listen to the song "Refugee" as a protest against the enormous progress booked by "Vlaams Blok" at the elections.
Time to move on now, those were yesterday's mistakes!
Yesterday's mistakes

Don't need another resolution

To feel as though I'm going somewhere, somewhere.

You said you needed me,

Or at least that's what I thought.

At times the memories

Seem to be knocking at my door.

I've seen the film a million times

Feels like I wrote the storyline

I refuse to replay

The mistakes that we made yesterday.

They were yesterdays mistakes (repeat)

I like to think I'm stronger now

Victim of common sense

The truth is that I know I still

Confuse the past with the present tense

Condensing what we had

To a single frame

That sticks in my mind

When I try to move on

The same image comes back every time

Forgive my selfishness

I'd be grateful if you can

Forget my ingratitude

You think I'm twice the girl I am

They say we should forgive

But not forget

What has gone before

I refuse to replay

The mistakes that we made yesterday

They were yesterdays mistakes

Yesterday's mistakes

I refuse to replay the mistakes that we made yesterday

"Refugee" by Oi Va Voi

The results of the Belgian elections are slowly trickling through and as a reaction to the enormous progress made by the nationalist party "Vlaams Blok" I would like to present you the song "Refugee" by Oi Va Voi.
Mingling traditional Jewish music with trip hop, raga, flamenco, ... Oi Va Voi is a shining example of multiculturalism and cross-over.

They will perform at Dour on 16 July and at Pukkelpop on 21 August.

Here you can read a review of their concert at The Botanique in Brussels on 7 May.
Lyrics: Refugee

You ask me,

Why it is I come to you,

when someone else is just as good.

I asked them but they said the same,

Didn't even ask my name.

Explain to me

Just what it is you have to lose

Take a minute in my shoes

Don't it feel like you've paid your dues

I'll show you,

That all our fates are so entwined

don't lose your faith in humankind

Just don't forget my state of mind

is fragile.

we can enjoy the taste of dignity

As long as you believe in me

I'll show you my reality

I've seen a few.

You ask me,

Why it is I come to you,

when someone else is just as good.

I asked them but they said the same,

Didn't even ask my name.

Another refugee.

Who will be my n° 4000??

First of all, Happy Father's Day to all fathers out there!
Tomorrow I will have an excuse for celebrating! On June 14th, Ad Mortem Festinamus will be exactly 3 months young and will probably welcome visitor N° 4000.
If my counter displays n° 4000 on your screen, I'd be delighted if you'd send me an e-mail (click the mail button in the left column!). Who are you? Were you looking for something in particular? And, what's most important, do you have a website or weblog that I can put in the spotlight?

Ashels in Melle on 11 June

Yesterday, the great day had come: the day on which we would attend Ashels’ concert in Melle with the free tickets we had won. When I came home from work around 6:15 p.m., I was rejoicing at the thought of having a hot shower and a decent meal, but my boyfriend greeted me with the words: “We should leave shortly, the concert starts at 7 o’clock”.

- What? Are you mad? I’m hardly awake at 7 o’clock in the evening! I’m a bit of a night bird, you see… So we rushed to the place where it was going to happen: “Rodeo Caravans” in Melle. Second surprise, a bit of a strange place for a concert, if you’d ask me! Then again, who needs conventionalism, anyway?

When we arrived, it appeared that the concert took place in the company’s hangar in which some caravans were exhibited and four rows of chairs were placed in front of a little stage. Somewhat later, it all would become clear! This concert was part of a series of activities organised on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the paved road that runs through Melle. Those inhabitants of Melle are quite right: any excuse to celebrate will do! That’s the spirit!

Ashels consists of a female singer, Annemie Piron, and 7 musicians.

I already knew two of the musicians from the band Fluxus (Cfr. my review of Fluxus), namely sax player, Koen Garriau, and his father Paul who plays the guitar and the hurdy-gurdy. Ashels also features another member of the Garriau family: -no, no, not Greet- but Ulrich, who plays the whistles (loads of them) and the bagpipes. Then there’s also bass player Jeroen Dewulf and drummer/percussionist Koen Danhieux. Wilfried De Schepper plays the guitar and the cello, while Guido De Meester takes care of percussion, Jew’s harp (which goes “woiiiiiing, woiiiiiing”), bagpipes and who knows what else!

Ashels brought a mix of songs in Dutch, in English as well as in French, and instrumental tunes, such as andros, squares, Schottisches, bourrées, polkas, jigs, …

In their invitation, Ashels had advised us to bring our dancing shoes, which turned out to be a valuable advice. Spurred by a few die-hard folkies, among which Aedo’s saxophone player (Cfr. my review of Aedo), the audience started dancing an andro throughout the hangar … and even in the caravans in order to ‘try out their stability’, as Koen nicely put it. I am happy to inform you that both the audience as the caravans passed the test! I must admit that I wasn’t among the dancers. I still haven’t got the hang of those typical folk dances. If only someone would teach me, one day, I might also throw caution to the winds!

To sum it up: this really was a sympathetic performance, with an enthusiastic audience and a pleasant atmosphere!

Because I've been rather lucky lately, I'd like to present you a more cheerful track by Boo!
If you click that play button, you can now listen to an extract of "Lucki".
Forgive them their spelling, they have this habit of writing words phonetically!

By the way, if you can't hear a thing, please drop by one hour later or so. I don't have a lot of bandwidth, so if someone is listening or has listened to the track it's possible that it won't be available for an hour. I promise I will look for a better solution!

Luck’s on my side lately! Not only did I pass my Polish exam yesterday –against all expectations, I tell you!– but I also won free tickets for the concert of Ashels in Melle on Friday 11 June. Thanks guys!!

"Duv Mafia" by Boo!

You can currently listen to an extract of “Duv Mafia” by Boo (Only if you click that play button, of course). This rather slow track is not really representative of the songs they play during their gigs, as they mainly play up-tempo songs, but I like it a lot. Most of the jungle noises that you hear are not produced by means of a keyboard, but by Chris and Ampie themselves. I think this song perfectly illustrates their vocal skills and their sense of humor!

Here are the links to the Boo! reviews:

Dour 15-18 July

The gods must be smiling down on me. The three bands that I wanted to see at the festival in Dour are scheduled on the same day! I wasn’t sure that I’d go to the festival, certainly not for more than one day, but now that I know that both Boo!, Oi Va Voi and the gothic band London After Midnight are all scheduled on the 16th of July, I cannot allow the opportunity to pass, can I?

So, you’ll probably find me in the front row at the Club Circuit Marquee during the performance of Boo!, Oi Va Voi and maybe Think of One. After that, I’ll probably seek out darker places, i.e. the Magic Tent, to check out Oomph!, The Crüxshadows, London After Midnight and Male or Female.

I only hope the gods will smile down on me when I ask a day off at work too, for the 16th of July is actually a Friday.

In the weeks to come I will organize a modest “Dour special” by putting some of the bands I mentioned in this article in the spotlight.

CMS in the spotlight

Let me introduce you to one of my favourite fellow bloggers. He’s called CMS and you can enter his cage of thoughts by visiting http://cms.skynetblogs.be.

I don’t know much about him, but I do know he has a wide-ranging taste in music. He’s also not adverse to pictures of beautiful women. In fact, I think he’s quite a lover of photographs in general, especially of the artistic ones.

Moreover, he has got something going with cows… arty cows that is! You’ll see it when you’ll get there. So it’s not a coincidence that I published this picture next to the article. I took it this afternoon while on a beautiful walk in the vicinity of Westvleteren (after we had just bought a crate of the best beer in the world, or so was I told by my boyfriend for I don’t drink beer anyway)! Maybe this picture wouldn’t be out of place in his collection?

"Name der rose" by Qntal

I’m still in the mood for some medieval music. This time you can listen to an extract of the song “Name der Rose” by Qntal.

The theme of Qntal’s 3rd album is the story of “Tristan and Isolde”.

In fact, I read this beautiful medieval love story twice in the modern French version (Tristan et Iseult) by René Louis.

I’d like to share a short extract with you, but beware, parental advisory!!!

It’s about the fathering of the story’s hero Tristan.

So next time you hug someone be careful, will you ! ;-)

And here are the Latin lyrics of the song “Name der Rose” by Qntal:

Omnis mundi creatura

quasi liber et pictura

nobis est in speculum;

nostrae vitae, nostrae mortis,

nostri status, nostrae sortis

fidele signaculum.

Nostrum statum pingit rosa,

nostri status decens glosa,

nostrae vitae lectio;

Rosa dum primo mane floret,

defloratus flos effloret

vespertino senio.

A word of thanks

Well, in less than 3 months the counter is approaching n° 4000. Time to thank a few people!

First of all, a big thank you to everyone who regularly visits Ad Mortem Festinamus: without you it wouldn’t be half as much fun! Keep on posting your comments, I adore some interaction!

Secondly, I’d like to thank the guys from Boo! for their warm reception of my reviews.

Also a big thank you to the following convinced monkipunkers for linking to Ad Mortem Festinamus:

I’d also like to thank Shantalla for their nice reaction to my review and for publishing it on their site. Today I even discovered that they have been mentioning it temporarily on their start page!

Many thanks to Jeugdhuis het Zwaantje for publishing my review of Helder in their members’ magazine.

And another thank you to Folkroddels for being a great website and for giving people the chance to publish their own folk reviews and pics on their site.

Congratulations to Celtic Bompa, as -if I’m not mistaken- it was he who taught the pupils of Gijzegem how to dance to folk music. And as you can read in my Aedo review he did a great job! I urgently ought to take some dancing classes too! Anyway, Celtic Bompa sent me a very positive reaction, so “merci”.

Finally I’d like to thank Viviane, the driving force behind blog-tips and the blog-tips forum, and all fellow bloggers mentioned in the right column, for their technical and other support!

All's not that bad...

AMF's move hasn't caused too much damage.
I was able to recover my number of visitors thanks to a free Bravenet counter. Moreover, this counter will work more accurately, for it won't measure the number of pageviews, but only the number of visits, even excluding my own visits.
I've added some buttons generated with http://www.grsites.com.

Not exactly perfect, but looks better than my improvised buttons, don't you think? Couldn't really decide on the colour, though. I keep on wondering whether red wouldn't be better.

The links to the reviews on my link page have been updated. The links to my photo albums have been restored too.
